Launch of the End FGM/C Network Africa

The Network was officially launched on 10th October 2023 during the 2nd African Union International Conference on Female Genital Mutilation that was held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania during one of the breakout sessions curated by Orchid Project that was dubbed “The Power of Social Movements to Address FGM/C: Unveiling of the END FGM/C Network Africa”. Thereafter, a public announcement of the African Network took place during main plenary at the closing ceremony of the AU conference on 11th October 2023 as a rallying call to the African delegates in attendance to support and join this Africa-led, Africa-driven initiative with a shared vision of having a unified voice, that will advocate and connect organizations and individuals dedicated to ending female genital mutilation/cutting across Africa. Currently, Orchid Project supports the establishment and operationalisation of the network as the Interim Secretariat.

Commemoration of the International Day of the Girl (IDG)

In celebration of the International Day of the Girl on 11th October 2024, our co-host the NGO Universal Education based in Niger; launched an impactful FGM/C awareness campaign under the theme "Educate, Empower, Eliminate FGM." This initiative took place in the Aéroport neighborhood of Niamey, where a group of young girls and women were the primary focus. The campaign aimed to educate the community on the critical importance of girls' education, empower them with knowledge on female genital mutilation, and raise awareness about the dangers of harmful practices like female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. This initiative equally promotes equal opportunities for girls and women, striving to foster sustainable development within the community and contribute to the elimination of FGM as part of the larger movement to end the practise.

Workshop on Incorporating Ending Harmful Practices into the African Union Gender Observatory (AUGO)

The African Network co-hosts and coordinator attended the workshop on Incorporating Ending Harmful Practices into the African Union Gender Observatory (AUGO) held on the 28th to 30th of September 2024 in Lusaka, Zambia. The African Network participation was geared towards being part of AUGO discussions on improved capacity of stakeholders to use the African Union Gender Observatory for monitoring and reporting of Harmful Practices, strengthened advocacy efforts to promote gender equality and protect the rights of women and girls, ensuring the enhancement of skills and knowledge of participants in implementing and monitoring gender mainstreaming and anti-harmful practices initiatives. The workshop also sought to create a network of stakeholders committed to ending harmful practices, facilitating ongoing collaboration and information sharing, and development of a detailed set of recommendations for integrating anti-harmful practices strategies into the AUGO framework. We are glad that the African Network was part of this workshop as it allowed for a mechanism to be developed on inclusion of harmful practices indicators to the Observatory.

Collaborative Workshop on Building Partnerships to Advance the End FGM/C Network, Africa

On 28th September 2024, the NGO Universal Education; our co-hosting organisation based in Niamey, Niger held a one (1) day collaboration workshop that brought together grassroots partners, civil society organisations, and government representatives to discuss the role of the End FGM/C Network, Africa. The workshop focused on the advancing the mission and objectives of the Africa Network in Niger, and how they stakeholders present could be part of the network’s mission to end female genital mutilation in the West Africa region. The collaborative workshop concluded with the formation of a working group that will be focusing on developing an action plan and establishing of a country reference group for Niger.
